PSU Women’s Soccer blanks Southern Maine

Goals by Crawford, Barker send Panthers to first LEC victory

GORHAM, Maine – Sophomore Emily Crawford (Albuquerque, N.M.) and senior Courtney Barker (Yarmouth, Maine) scored less than two minutes apart in the first half Saturday afternoon to lead the Plymouth State University Panthers to a 2-0 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference women's soccer match at Hannaford Field.

PSU sophomore keeper Annaliese Schmidt (Newmarket, N.H.) made 10 saves to post her second shutout of the season. Stopping a four-game losing streak, Plymouth State improves to 2-4 overall with the win and 1-1 in the Little East.  Southern Maine dips to 2-7-1 with the loss and is 0-2 in the LEC.

Locked in a scoreless game, Plymouth State scored both of its goals in the final three and a half minutes of the first half.  Moments after Barker checked into the game for the Panthers she sent a ball across the Huskies' six finding Crawford for her second goal of the season at 41:39.  With a 1-0 lead secured, Barker then scored a goal of her own at 43:32 redirecting a ball out of the air from junior midfielder Latisha Bodge (Rochester, N.H./Spaulding). Barker's second goal of the season put the Panthers in front 2-0.

The Huskies' had several quality opportunities to score but were unable to find the back of the net.  In the first half junior CC Pelletier (West Newfield, Maine/Massabesic) hit the side of the post in the 12th minute. The Huskies' best chance in the second half came in the 53rd minute when senior Kelly Burrell (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) took a crack at goal.  Burrell's driven shot was headed for the far post netting, but was stopped on a spectacular diving effort from Schmidt.

Southern Maine junior Marissa Temple (Grafton, Mass.) played well in goal, making seven saves.

Southern Maine hosts Bowdoin College on Wednesday (4:00 p.m.) in a non-conference game.  Plymouth State travels to Endicott for a non-conference game on Monday (4:00 p.m.)
