Wojtas, Schmidt, Jakubas earn recognition for Panthers
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Three Plymouth State University student-athletes were recognized by the Little East Conference (LEC) Monday with top weekly honors for their performances in Panther victories last week.
Sophomore Brianna Wojtas (Salem, N.H.) was named LEC Women's Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week; sophomore Annaliese Schmidt (Yarmouth, Maine) was named LEC Women's Soccer Goalkeeper of the Week, and freshman Sunny Jakubas (Califon, N.J./Voorhees) was tabbed as LEC Women's Tennis Rookie of the Week. It is the first weekly conference honor for Wojtas and Jakubas, while Schmidt also earned the same honor once last season.
A 5'10" middle blocker, Wojtas did not record a single attack error last week, recording a .594 hitting percentage (19-0-32) in two straight-set victories for the Panthers. She knocked down six kills against Lasell and 13 in the LEC win over UMass Dartmouth while adding four blocks and two aces on the week. Wojtas is ranked sixth in the LEC in attack percentage (.222) for the season.
A 5'10" sophomore keeper, Schmidt had an outstanding week between the pipes for the Panthers, anchoring the team to a 1-1 week. She made a career-high 17 saves last Wednesday in a 2-1 loss at Worcester State, and followed with 10 stops on Saturday in a 2-0 whitewash of Southern Maine for her second shutout of the season. Schmidt owns the league's highest save percentage (.920) this season and ranks second in saves (69).
A 5'6" freshman, Jakubas was perfect at both No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles with sister Zara last week, helping the Panthers remaining undefeated this season (7-0 overall, 3-0 LEC). Jakubas won her singles matches over both Lyndon State College and LEC foe UMass Dartmouth in straight sets, improving her record to 6-1, and the Jakubas sisters are now perfect in seven doubles matches after 8-1 and 8-2 triumphs last week.
