Bell leads Panthers with two goals and two assists
NEW HAMPTON, N.H. – Senior Emily Bell (Derry, N.H.) played a part in all four goals Saturday as Plymouth State University defeated Rhode Island College, 4-0, in Little East Conference women's soccer action at the New Hampton School.
Bell scored her first two goals of the season for the Panthers and assisted on the other two, and sophomore keeper Annaliese Schmidt (Newmarket, N.H.) made four saves to post her third shutout of the year. PSU evened its LEC record at 2-2 (4-7 overall) while RIC dropped to 0-4 in conference play (2-10 overall).
The Panthers got on the board less than three minutes into the contest when Bell took a through-ball from freshman Kate Dasey (Concord, N.H.) on the right side and dumped it past the keeper for a 1-0 lead. PSU doubled the margin in the 24th minute when Bell served a corner kick into the box, and freshman Ashley Brenner (Londonderry, N.H./Trinity) put a header into the back of the net for her second goal of the season. PSU had a 9-3 advantage in shots in the first half and a two-goal lead.
Bell extended the score 12 minutes into the second half when she dribbled past two defenders going to her right and then scored on a shot back to the left side. The Panthers finished off the scoring in the 73rd minute when Bell served another corner kick into the box, and senior Brittany Terra (Bristol, R.I.) scored on a header for her first goal of the season.
PSU finished with a 16-5 advantage in shots. RIC senior keepers Audrey Maia (Norton, Mass.) and Justina Thoma (Canterbury, Conn.) each allowed two goals and made four saves in the setback.
After four straight home games, PSU plays its next five contests on the road, beginning Sunday, Oct. 12, at Johnson State College (1:00 p.m.) RIC is back in action Wednesday at Fitchburg State (7:00 p.m.)
