Bell, Kallis lead Panthers to non-conference win
JOHNSON, Vt. – Senior Emily Bell (Derry, N.H.) and sophomore Hannah Kallis (Sanford, Maine) recorded a goal and an assist each Sunday afternoon as the Plymouth State University women's soccer team posted a 2-1 non-conference win over their host Johnson State College at Minaert Field.
PSU wins for the second time in as many days, improving to 5-7-0 on the season, while Johnson State drops back to the .500 mark at 7-7-0.
Shannon Grier scored the Badgers lone goal off of a feed from Kylie Aither who recorded her sixth assist of the season.
Plymouth State jumped out to an early lead pressuring the Badger offense early. Just 11 minutes into play, Kallis took advantage of Bell's through ball, found a gap in the Badgers defense and placed a ball in between the near post and Johnson's goalkeeper, Amber McCullock. The teams battled the next 20 minutes largely in the center until Johnson seized a lull in Plymouth's play. At the 34 minute mark, Aither stole a ball off of a Plymouth midfielder, made a quick look to the center and placed a crisp ball to Grier's feet. Grier, 25 yards out, wound up and launched a beautiful arcing ball over the outstretched gloves of Plymouth's keeper. The teams headed into the halftime break tied at 1-1.
PSU came back from the break strong wasting little time to get back on the board. At the 49 minute mark, Bell attempted a shot, but missed wide prompting a goal kick. Swanson met the ball first, passing to Kallis who crossed the ball into the center for Bell who beat out McCullock in on one-on-one situation. With the goal, the Panthers took the 2-1 lead, which would eventually seal the deal for the visitors.
Johnson's McCullock saved seven shots while PSU sophomore keeper Annaliese Schmidt (Newmarket, N.H.) picked up the win after turning away nine shots in net.
Johnson State will return to action next Saturday against New England College for a 12:00pm North Atlantic Conference match while Plymouth State faces off against Gordon College Wednesday for a 3:30pm start.
