Panthers come up short in non-conference affair
BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Sophomore Courtney Pepin (Uxbridge, Mass.) tallied the game's only goal Saturday afternoon to lead the Bridgewater State University women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over non-conference foe Plymouth State University at Swenson Field.
The win marked the first of the season for the Bears who improve to 1-3 overall, while the visiting Panthers slip to 1-2.
Plymouth State junior keeper Annaliese Schmidt (Newmarket, N.H.) made four stops between the pipes for the Panthers.
The Bears took the 1-0 lead with less than two minutes remaining in the opening stanza as freshman Caitlin Rowley (Lakeville, Mass.) split the Plymouth State defense with a short pass that sent Pepin in on a breakaway. Pepin dribbled in uncontested and beat the PSU netminder with a shot inside the left post.
Bridgewater had three quality scoring opportunities late in the second half but were unable to make it a two-goal game. Senior Marissa Yowell (Ashland, Mass.) hit the outside of the near post on a semi-breakaway with just under five minutes remaining. Moments later, junior Amanda Leite (New Bedford, Mass.) ripped a shot from 20-yards out that sailed just wide of the right post. Junior Drew Guay (Fall River, Mass.) also just missed on a shot from 25-yards out off a nice setup from Yowell with two minutes left to play.
Sophomore goaltender Lauren DeSousa (Taunton, Mass.) made three saves on the afternoon as she notched her first win and shutout in a BSU uniform. The Bears held an 11-9 shot advantage for the game as well as a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
Both teams are back in action on Wednesday; the Bears host Rhode Island College at seven, while the Panthers travel to Norwich University for a seven o'clock game with the Cadets.
