PSU Women’s Soccer edges Rhode Island College

Kallis scores game-winner for Panthers in third minute of game

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Hannah Kallis (Sanford, Maine) scored the only goal of the game in the third minute Saturday afternoon and Plymouth State University held on to defeat Rhode Island College, 1-0, in Little East Conference women's soccer action at the RIC Soccer Field.

After a throw-in in RIC's defensive zone, PSU junior Cassie Lacroix (Candia, N.H.) and senior striker Emily Bell (Derry, N.H.) were able to work the ball to Kallis in the box. Kallis made a move to get to open space then fired a low shot past RIC freshman goalkeeper Katherine Haley (Hope, R.I.) for her fourth goal of the year.

RIC senior Gabrielle Turner (Smithfield, R.I.) was denied on two quality scoring opportunities late in the game. PSU junior goalkeeper Annaliese Schmidt (Newmarket, N.H.) finished with 10 saves to earn her first shutout of the season. PSU improves to 5-5 overall and 2-3 in Little East games, while RIC falls to 2-12 and 0-5 in the LEC.

RIC began a furious comeback bid with 15 minutes left in the second half. The hosts thought they had tied the game when freshman Brittany DeGrooth's (Westerly, R.I.) header off a breakaway went in, but the play was ruled offsides.

A minute later, Turner walked in alone from the left side against Schmidt. Turner chipped a shot aimed for the top right corner, but Schmidt dove back to her left and made a highlight-reel stop.

With 2:07 remaining, Turner rifled a shot from just outside the top of the box, but it found the crossbar. The carom came right to junior Chelsea Combs (Ashford, Conn.), but Schmidt corralled her header. Plymouth State cleared the ball in the ensuing minutes deep into RIC territory to preserve the win.

The Panthers led in shots, 21-18, and corner kicks, 5-2. Haley made six saves in the loss (1-8). Freshman Stefanie Togbasi (Providence, RI) came in for the final 18 minutes and made three stops.

PSU returns home to host Hamilton College Sunday at noon in a non-conference match-up at Arold Field. Rhode Island College will host Fitchburg State on Wednesday (6 p.m.).
