PSU Student-Athletes earn Little East Conference weekly honors

Panthers recognized in soccer, cross country

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Two Plymouth State University student-athletes were recognized by the Little East Conference Monday, receiving weekly honors as the fall sports teams head into the home stretch of the regular season.

Junior Caitlin Johnson (Newington, Conn.) was named LEC Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the; and freshman Noah Byington (Hanscomb AFB, Mass/Bedford) is the LEC Men's Cross Country Rookie Runner of the Week. Byington receives the honor for the second week in a row, while Johnson is a first-time recipient.

A 5-3 defender, Johnson helped Plymouth State to a pair of shutout victories last week, defeating Colby-Sawyer 1-0 and Southern Maine 2-0. PSU defended 16 shots in the double overtime game against Colby-Sawyer, and limited Southern Maine to eight shots in the whitewash. They were PSU's seventh and eighth shutouts of the season.

PSU, 7-2-2 overall and 2-2 in the LEC, has matched last year's win total (7-9-1) and will be out to win its eighth game for the first time since 2007 (8-9). The Panthers are seeking their first winning season since 2003 (10-7-1).

Byington placed 95th among 432 runners at the James Earley Invitational last Saturday at Westfield State. He ran the 8,000 meter course in 27:46, his PR by two seconds. Byington was the top LEC freshman in the race, and was PSU's third scorer on the 14th place Panther team.

The Panther runners wrap up the regular season this Friday at the Emmanuel College Invitational. The Little East Championships are Saturday, Oct. 29, at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.
