Whittier nets first collegiate goal for Panthers

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Plymouth State University women's soccer team fell, 2-1, to non-conference foe Bridgewater State University in overtime on Sunday evening at Swenson Field.

The Panthers struck first when freshman Diana Whittier (Sutton, Mass.) notched her first collegiate goal in the 33rd minute. Classmate Mallory Lloyd (Hartland, Vt.) used a corner kick to find Whittier at the top of the box, who redirected the pass into the center of the net for the goal.

Bridgewater State responded in the second half when senior Nicole Simas scored the game-tying goal in the 53rd minute. The Bears sent a free kick into the box and Simas flipped the ball past PSU keeper Molly Robinson (Millstone, N.J.) to even the game.

The Panthers had opportunities to regain the lead, but BSU goalie Lauren DeSousa made multiple stops and the game moved into overtime.

Simas buried her second goal of the game three minutes into the extra frame when she scored off a corner kick by sophomore Alana Vincent. Vincent sent the ball into the box and classmate Amelia Burke one-timed a short pass to Simas, who slipped the ball into the right side from just outside the six.

Junior Leandra Nault (Goffstown, N.H.) had the start in goal for the Panthers, turning away five shots in the first half. Robinson came on for the second half and overtime, suffering her first loss of the season (1-1).

Plymouth State falls to 2-1 on the season and will host Southern Vermont College on Wednesday (Sept. 13) at 4:00 p.m. in a non-conference matchup.
