Lloyd, Holmes lead Panthers past Pilgrims
HENNIKER, N.H. – Despite being outshot 22-8, the Plymouth State University women's soccer team came awy with a 3-0 win over non-conference opponent New England College on a cold and rainy night to improve to 5-6-0 overall.
The Pilgrims controlled play early, outshooting the Panthers 9-3 before freshman Mallory Lloyd (Hartland, Vt.) got the scoring going in the 33rd minute on a shot from the top of the box on the right side. The rookie drove her shot past NEC junior goalkeeper Kayla Pugliese (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) and under the crossbar.
NEC had one of its best chances in the first half when junior Emily LePage (West Greenwich, R.I.) dribbled across the top of the box around three Panther defenders and launched a shot just over the crossbar.
NEC came out on fire to start the second half, earning four corner kicks in the first three minutes. The Pilgrims were unable to capitalize on any of them, however, as PSU junior goalkeeper Leandra Nault (Goffstown, N.H.) defended the net well.
Plymouth State doubled its lead in the 54th minute when senior defender Kat Holmes (Newmarket, N.H.) tallied her first goal as a Panther when she drilled home a 30-yard free kick to the top left corner.
The Pilgrims continued to launch a barrage of shots on Nault, which were either right at the Panther net minder or missing just wide on shots beyond 25-yards out. Plymouth State capped the scoring in the 66th minute when Lloyd dropped a corner kick on the back post where Holmes fired a one-timer that was redirected off an NEC defender and into the back of the net.
NEC came the closest to breaking through in the 79th minute when forward Taylor Grant (East Providence, R.I.) hit a beautiful cross on the left sideline that deflected off the crossbar.
Nault made seven saves to pick up her first career shutout and improve to 3-2-0, while Pugliese dropped to 4-7-0.
Plymouth State returns to action this Saturday (Oct. 14) when they host LEC foe Southern Maine on Senior Day. Game time is set for 1:30 p.m. The Pilgrims are also back on the pitch on Saturday, when they make their final road trip of the regular season to Husson University for a 3:00 p.m. game.
