Panthers eyeing return to LEC Tournament
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Set to enter his fifth season at the helm, Plymouth State University women's soccer coach Ryan Joy has announced the team's 2018 schedule.
Joy and the Panthers are seeking a return to the Little East Conference (LEC) Tournament after narrowly missing out on postseason action last fall.
PSU is set to play a 16-game regular season, which includes eight LEC contests as the league welcomes Castleton to the mix. Plymouth opens the season Aug. 31 (2:00 p.m.) with a road contest at UMaine Farmington before kicking off the home schedule Sept 1. (1:00 p.m.) against Northern Vermont University – Lyndon (formerly Lyndon State College).
The Panthers are on the road for the next three games, including the LEC opener. PSU will travel to Roger Williams on Sept. 8 (12:00 p.m.), Southern Vermont on Sept. 11 (4:00 p.m.) and LEC-rival UMass Dartmouth on Sept. 15 (3:00 p.m.). The Panthers and Corsairs have played a number of close matches in recent history. Last fall UMD's goal in the 95th minute secured a 1-0 overtime win, while the Panthers eliminated the Corsairs from the LEC Tournament in 2016, advancing on penalty kicks (4-3) after 110 scoreless minutes.
The Panthers return home for a three game homestand starting with Curry on Sept. 18 (4:00 p.m.). PSU will also play a pair of LEC contests during the stretch, facing Southern Maine on Sept. 22 (1:00 p.m.) before a Homecoming contest against Rhode Island College on Sept. 26 (3:30 p.m.). Last fall the Anchorwomen ended PSU's postseason hopes with a 2-0 win in the season finale.
Plymouth State travels to Eastern Connecticut to wrap up the September portion of the schedule with a contest at Nevers Field on Sept. 29 (1:00 p.m.).
The Panthers open October with a pair of home games against in-state rivals. PSU hosts New England College on Oct. 3 (3:00 p.m.) and LEC foe Keene State on Oct. 6 (1:00 p.m.).
PSU will visit Castleton, the newest member of the conference, on Oct. 10 (7:00 p.m.), before returning home for a league showdown with UMass Boston (Oct. 13, 1:00 p.m.). The Panthers then celebrate Senior Day with a non-conference game against Nichols (Oct. 20, 2:30 p.m.), before wrapping up the season with road games at Salem State (Oct. 24, 7:00 p.m.) and the LEC and regular season finale at Western Connecticut (Oct. 27, 12:00 p.m.)
The top six finishers in the regular season will advance to the LEC Tournament with first round action on Oct. 30. The top two seeds will earn byes to the semifinals, with the third and fourth seeds hosting the opening round. The top overall seed will host the Final Four, with semifinals set for Nov. 2 and the championship game slated for Nov. 3.
