Martin named Defensive Player of the Week
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – A senior captain on the Plymouth State University women's soccer team was among those honored by the Little East Conference (LEC) as the league announced its weekly award winners on Monday.
Kate Martin (Westmoreland, N.H.) was selected as the LEC Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week after helping the Panthers to a 1-0-1 week against a pair of in-state rivals.
Her biggest performance came at the end of the week as she scored the game-winning goal in a 2-0 win over LEC foe Keene State on Saturday. On a set play off a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box, Martin snuck behind the defense and headed a perfectly delivered ball into the open net in the game's 54th minute to break a scoreless deadlock. PSU's win over the Owls was its first since the 1998 season.
Martin kicked off the week by providing veteran leadership to settle the Panthers' defense down after allowing a pair of early goals in a 2-2 tie against New England College on Wednesday. After falling behind 2-0 in the game's first 13 minutes, Martin and the defense recovered to hold the Pilgrims off the scoreboard for the final 96:25, while giving the offense a chance to fight back.
Martin has a knack for performing best when it matters the most as two of her three goals on the year have been game winners. The senior captain's seven points (3G, 1A) are the fourth-most on the team.
Plymouth State (6-3-2, 2-3-0 LEC) has a pair of crucial league contests this week as the team fights for playoff positioning. PSU travels to Castleton for a 7:00 p.m. game on Wednesday (Oct. 10), before hosting UMass Boston on Saturday (Oct. 13) at 1:00 p.m.
