Catania named Defensive Player of the Week
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – After helping the Plymouth State University women's soccer team to a pair of shutout wins, senior Caitlin Catania (Billerica, Mass.) has earned Little East Conference (LEC) weekly recognition by being named the Defensive Player of the Week.
Catania played a key role as the Panthers didn't allow a goal in wins over Nichols and Castleton last week. She anchored a strong defensive unit that allowed just three shots on goal in a 2-0 win at Nichols on Wednesday.
On Saturday against LEC foe Castleton, she was at it again as PSU posted back-to-back shutouts for the first time since the first three games of the 2018 season. With PSU nursing a 1-0 advantage and the Panthers' goalkeeper on the ground, a Castleton forward picked up the loose ball and fired a shot on target, but Catania was there to clear it away and preserve the lead.
Catania has been the foundation of a PSU defense that has surrendered just 2.16 goals per game. The senior has been reliable in the back all year, appearing in 15 of the team's 16 games, including 14 starts, and has contributed offensively with a goal and two assists.
With the win over Castleton, Plymouth State evened its record at 8-8 overall and improved to 4-3 in the LEC, the most conference wins since the 2003 season. PSU closes out the regular season Saturday (Nov. 2) at Eastern Connecticut. With a win the Panthers assure themselves of a home playoff game.
