PSC Women's Swimming and Diving mid-season update
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - One of only three home meets this season for the Plymouth State College women's swimming and diving team is a tri-meet this Saturday at the P.E. Center pool against Simmons College and Skidmore College (1:00 p.m.).
The Panthers are looking to extend their winning streak to six. The string of victories reach five last Saturday in the first meet of the semester, a 114-93 verdict at Regis College. After opening the dual meets last semester with a loss to Westfield State, PSC defeated Salem State, UMass Dartmouth, Bentley, and Eastern Connecticut.
PSC will have a pair of road contests before the final home meet of the season, an important Presidents' Trophy confrontation against Keene State on Feb. 4th.
Seventh-year head coach Al Switzer is pleased with the performance of the team. Five individuals have qualified for the New England Championships, and four school records have been set.
"Both the divers and swimmers have improved dramatically since the beginning of the season," said Switzer. "Some of the relays are now beginning to jell. The biggest challenge facing the team will be to improve some of the performances to a level which will score at the New Englands."
Leading the way for PSC has been senior Kathy Boyd (Manhasset, NY). She has been outstanding in both swimming and diving, qualifying for New Englands in both areas. She set the school record in the one-meter diving (voluntary) in November (174.45), and established the PSC mark in the 200 butterfly (2:26.52) last weekend at Regis. She also has been PSC's top swimmer in the I.M. and breaststroke events.
Sophomore freestyler Meaghan Buckley (Haverhill, MA) has been PSC's top sprinter, and has qualified for the New Englands. She is unbeaten in the 50 and 100 free in dual meets, and has twice set the school record in the 200 free (2:05.84).
Other top performers on the team include senior Danielle Paturzo (Marlow, NH), juniors Mamie Ramback (Franconia, NH), Christa Smith (No. Yarmouth, ME), and Sandra Twaddell (Jaffrey, NH) and sophomore Sara Lagasse (Haverhill, MA). Paturzo and Ramback both reached the New England qualifying times in the 50 and 100 yard backstroke events, as Paturzo is enjoying a fine senior season and Ramback is returning after a year's absence. Paturzo has also been strong in butterfly and I.M. races, and Smith and Twadell are looking to qualify in freestyle events. Lagasse has continued her solid improvement in diving, qualifying for New Englands and setting school records on both boards, giving PSC a threat on the three-meter board for the first time in years.
