WILLIMANTIC, Conn. - The Plymouth State College women's swimming & diving team concluded the first semester's competition on a winning note Saturday, defeating Eastern Connecticut State University, 143-118.
The Panthers defeated the Warriors for the fourth consecutive season and even their 1999-2000 season mark at 2-2. ECSU drops to 3-2.
Senior captain Meaghan Buckley (Haverhill, Mass.) and sophomore Allison Bregy (Camden, Maine) led the way for the Panthers, winning three individual events each. Buckley captured the 50, 100 and 200 yard freestyle races (26.28, 56.88 and 2:04.65, repsectively), marking the fourth consecutive Panther dual meet that she has won three freestyle events. The versatile Bregy placed first in the 100 breaststroke (1:17.64), the 200 backstroke (2:30.00) and the 200 individual medley (2:28.06), giving her seven individual victories in PSC's four meets this semester.
Also bringing home first place finishes for PSC were senior Sandy Twaddell (Jaffrey, NH), who won the 500 yard freestyle in 5:46.52, and freshman Andrea Boutilier (Chicopee, Mass.), who captured the 100 backstroke in 1:07.85. Twaddell, who has three individual wins this season, also took second in the 200 free. Boutilier, who has five individual victories, also finished runner-up in the 100 free and 200 I.M. Senior Joyce Mailhot (Lewiston, Maine) finished second in both the 100 and 200 back.
The Panthers will take a break for final exams and the holidays before hosting an Alumni meet on Saturday, Jan. 8th. Led by eighth-year head coach Al Switzer, PSC returns to action for real the following Saturday, Jan. 15, at the P.E. Center Pool against Simmons College (1 p.m.).
