Panthers dunk Salem State to even mark

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Plymouth State College won nine of the first 12 events and went on to defeat Salem State College in a women's swimming and diving meet Wednesday evening at the PSC Natatorium, 155-129.

The victory evened PSC's record this season at 1-1, while Salem dropped to 0-1. The Panthers have defeated the Vikings six straight years.

The Panthers were led by sophomore Vanessa Re (West Hartford, Conn.) and freshman Scarlette Scarborough (Salem, N.H.), who each won two individual events. Re captured the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 13 minutes, 16.27 seconds, and she took first in the 100 breaststroke in 1:22.85. Scarborough registered a victory in the 100 butterfly in 1:08.44 and came back to win the 100 backstroke in 1:09.33.

Other individual winners for PSC included freshman Stephanie Corbeil (Manchester, N.H./ Memorial) in the 50 backstroke (33.40), sophomore Megan Anderson (South Windsor, Conn.) in the 50 breaststroke, freshman Kristin Kearins (Andover, Mass.) in the one-meter diving (208.85), and junior Allison Bregy (Camden, Maine) in the 500 freestyle.

PSC was also victorious in the 200 yard medley relay (2:06.59), with the team of Scarborough, Re, Bregy and junior Amy Bernier (Bristol, Conn.)

The Vikings were led by junior Emily Carson (Danvers, Mass.), who captured first place in the 50 free (27.22), the 100 free (58.52) and the 200 free (2:08.30).

Other Salem State winners included sophomore Kerry Strong (Granby, Mass.) in the 50 butterfly (30.46), junior Shannon O'Brien (Danvers, Mass.) in the three-meter diving, and freshman Tiffany Mendoza (Bradford, Mass.) in the 100 individual medley (1:13.36). The Vikings won the final event, the 200 free relay (1:58.22), with the team of Strong, Alicia Pouliot (Brewster, Mass.) Mendoza and Carson.

PSC gets right back into the pool this Friday (Nov. 17) with a dual meet at Bentley (5 p.m.).
