PSC places fourth at Betty Spears Relays

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - The women's swimming and diving season at Plymouth State College got off to a good start Saturday at the annual Betty Spears Relays, hosted by Wellesley College.

The Panthers placed fourth out of five teams, but the PSC coaching staff got to see the team in competition for the first time this year. The meet, which is a fun opener to the season, include races not normally swam during the season, like the 300-yard butterfly, 300-yard backstroke, and 300-yard butterfly relays, as well as 1500 freestyle and diving relays.

Host Wellesley won the event with 298 points, well ahead of runner-up Smith College (158). Babson College finished third (102), followed by Plymouth State (58) and Westfield State (46).

The top placing team for PSC was the 300-yard butterfly trio of sophomore Scarlette Scarborough (Salem, N.H.) and seniors Amy Bernier (Bristol, Conn.) and Allison Bregy (Camden, Maine), who took fourth place.

PSC's diving contingent was the top scoring unit at the meet for the Panthers. Sophomores Jen Crecenzi (Killingworth, Conn.) and Krit Kearins (Andover, Mass.) teamed up to place second out of nine teams on the one-meter board and first out of seven teams on three meter. Sophomore Becky Huntington (Hampstead, N.H.) and freshman Kate Fuller (Ashfield, Mass.) placed fourth on one meter and second on three meter, giving PSC a 1-2 finish on the high board.

The Panthers compete in the first dual meet of the seaosn next Saturday (Nov. 10) at Westfield State (1:00 p.m.).
