Scarborough finishes 2nd in 400 I.M.

WALTHAM, Mass. - Plymouth State College remains in sixth place after Day Two at the annual New England Women's Swimming and Diving Championships, hosted by Bentley College.

The Panthers are sixth with 293 points. Bentley leads the way with 649, followed by Keene State (471), UMass Dartmouth (431), Brandeis (418), and St. Michael's (368). There are 20 teams competing in the event.

Junior Scarlette Scarborough (Salem, N.H.) had another strong day for the Panthers. After breaking the 11-year old school record in the 100-yard butterfly on Friday night, Scarborough came back Saturday to finish runner-up in the 400-yard individual medley and establish another PSC standard. Her time of 4:56.46 is the first sub-five minute mark in school history, and breaks the pervious record of 5:02.48 set last year by Allison Bregy.

Scarborough also swam the second leg of the 800-yard freestyle relay. She teamed with senior Caitlin O'Connor (Rochester, N.H.), freshman Tessa Ferrario (Waterbury, Vt.) and junior Annabelle Winters (Chester, NH) to finish in sixth place with a time of 8:42.84. It was the best finish for PSC in the four relay races in the meet so far.

Others who competed in Saturday's evening finals included O'Connor, 10th in the 200 free (2:09.38), senior Vanessa Re (West Hartford, Conn.), 12th in the 400 I.M. (season-best 5:34.03); and sophomore Pam Shea (Cheshire, Conn.), 15th in the 100 back (1:08.91).

The competition continues through Sunday.
