Westfield too much for PSU Swimming & Diving
WESTFIELD, Mass. - The Westfield State College women's swimming and diving team upped its record to 4-1 Saturday afternoon, defeating Plymouth State University, 152-136.
The host Owls captured 10 of the 16 events. Sophomores Lindsay Bartosz and Vanessa Morton led the way, with Bartosz winning the 50 yard backstroke and the 100 yard freestyle while Morton captured the 50 breaststroke, 200 individual medley and 500 free.
Other top performances from the hosts came from senior Jenny Gilbert, who won the 50 free and finished second in the 50 back. Freshman Rachel Webb won the 200 free, freshman Katie Piquette took the 100 breaststroke, and sophomore Shannon McMahon brought home first in the 50 butterfly.
Seniors Krit Kearins (Andover, Mass.) and Scarlette Scarborough (Salem, N.H.) were double winners for PSU, which fell to 2-2. Kearins won the one-meter (206.10) and three-meter (239.55) diving events, while Scarborough took the 100 yard butterfly (1:05.21) and 100 backstroke (1:07.58) in a pair of season-best times. Senior Annabelle Winters (Chester, N.H.) also captured the 1000-yard freestyle in 11:55.10.
After a break for final exams and the holidays, Plymouth State will compete in the annual Alumni Meet on Saturday, Jan. 3. The next official meet is Saturday, Jan. 10, at the PSU Natatorium against Bentley College (1:00 p.m.).
