WALTHAM, Mass. - Plymouth State University posted several season-best times and set two school records Friday on the first day of the New England Women's Swimming and Diving Championships, hosted by Bentley College.
The Panthers are in seventh place overall after Day One, having scored 163 points in the nine events so far. Bentley leads the way with 343 points, ahead of runner-up UMass Dartmouth, which has 266, and there are 21 teams competing. The event continues both Saturday and Sunday.
PSU's diving contingent led the way with outstanding performances, just as the three seniors have done all season. Seniors Krit Kearins (Andover, Mass.), Becky Huntington (Hampstead, N.H.), and Jenna Crescenzi (Killingworth, Conn.) all placed in the top five in Friday's one-meter event, and all three broke the school record of 292.85 points established by Kearins at the same meet last season. Kearins defended her New England one-meter championship with a score of 345.75, while Huntington was runner-up with a score of 321.25, and Crescenzi placed fifth with a score of 309.50.
Freshman Cait Anton (Woolwich, Maine) turned in the top performance among the Panther swimmers, bringing home fifth place in the 200-yard backstroke in 2:23.76. She set a school record in the event with a time of 2:19.24 in the preliminaries, breaking the six-year-old Panther mark of 2:21.13 by Danielle Paturzo.
Seniors Scarlette Scarborough (Salem, N.H.) and Annabelle Winters (Chester, N.H.) posted strong finishes with season-best times for PSU. Scarborough took seventh in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:04.40, and Winters placed 11th in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:39.65. Freshman Rachel Hersey (Newburyport, Mass.) also placed 12th in the 50-yard free in 27.55 seconds after swimming a season-fastest 26.93 in the prelims.
PSU's relay teams finished in the middle of the pack. The 200-yard free relay unit of Hersey, Scarborough, Winters and senior Andrea Denoncour (Chicopee, Mass.) placed 10th with a time of 1:50.25, and the 400-yard medley relay squad of Denoncour, freshman Katie Bouffard (Essex Jct., Vt.), Scarborough and Winters took 11th in 4:31.98.
