Panthers top Regis in womens swimming & diving
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Plymouth State University captured 14 of the 16 events Saturday afternoon and defeated Regis College, 162-98, in a women's swimming and diving meet at the PSU Natatorium.
PSU collects its first victory of the season, evening its record at 1-1, while the Pride fell to 2-3 on the season.
Freshman Christina Miller (Manchester, N.H./Central) led the Panther swimmers, recording three individual victories and competing on the winning freestyle relay team. Miller won the 100-yard butterfly (1 minute, 6.37 seconds) and the 50-yard butterfly (30.32 seconds) in addition to the 100-yard freestyle (58.58).
Two other Panthers picked up victories in two individual events each. Senior captain Annabelle Winters (Chester, N.H.) took first in the 200-yard freestyle (2:09.45) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:08.77); sophomore Katie Bouffard (Essex Jct., Vt.) won the 50-yard breaststroke (36.14 seconds) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:18.20); and freshman Christina DiGiacomo (Meriden, Conn.) touched first in the 50-yard free (27.79 seconds) and 500-yard free (5:58.76).
Three others captured one individual event apiece for PSU - freshman Erin Musto (Westford, Mass.) in the 1,000-yard free (12:46.69), junior Stephanie Gillaspie (Derry, N.H.) in the 50-yard backstroke (36.00), and sophomore Danielle DeStefano (Centerville, Mass.) in the one-meter diving - optional, with a score of 123.05.
PSU also won both relay events, with the team of Gillaspie, Bouffard, Winters and DiGiacomo taking the 200-yard medley relay (2:09.11) and the foursome of DiGiacomo, Winters, freshman Melissa Walczak (Farmington, Conn.), and Miller placing first in the 400-yard free relay. (4:12.40).
Regis earned two first place finishes - sophomore Shannon Behrle (Chelmsford, Mass.) winning the one-meter diving - voluntary (with a score of 129.05), and junior Colleen Colarusso (Middleboro, Mass.) in the 200-yard individual medley (2:31.51.).
After a break for Thanksgiving, PSU competes again at the Little East Conference Championship meet on Saturday, Dec. 4, and UMass Dartmouth. Regis returns to action the same day at the Commonwealth Coast Conference meet at Roger Williams.
