More swimming records for PSU’s Anton at New England Championships

WALTHAM, Mass. - For the second straight day, sophomore Cait Anton (Woolwich, Maine) broke her own school backstroke record twice to highlight Plymouth State University's performance Saturday on Day Two of the New England Women's Swimming and Diving Championships, hosted by Bentley College.

The Panthers as a team have scored 123 points and are in 11th place among 22 schools in the three-day event.  Bentley leads the standings with 630 points, with Brandeis second (496) and Keene State third (413).

Anton, who broke school records in both the 200-yard backstroke preliminaries and finals on Friday, repeated the record-breaking performance in Saturday's 100-yard backstroke.  She finished seventh and set a new mark in the preliminaries with a time of 1:05.51, to break the mark of 1:05.52 she set at last year's championships.  She lowered the standard more than a second in the consolation finals with a clocking of 1:04.43, bringing home a seventh-place finish.

Anton also swam the leadoff leg on both of PSU's relay teams on Saturday.  She was followed by sophomore Katie Bouffard (Essex Jct., Vt.) and freshmen Erin Musto (Westford, Mass.), and Christina DiGiacomo (Meriden, Conn.) on the 200-yard medley relay team that placed 14th, and she was followed by freshmen Melissa Walczak (Farmington, Conn.), Kristen Mulcahy (Pawtucket, R.I.) and DiGiacomo on the 800-yard freestyle relay team that took 11th.

The other top PSU individual performances came from DiGiacomo, who placed 12th in the 200-yard free (season-best 2:09.39), and Musto, who finished 15th in the 1,000-yard free (season-best 12:12.68).

The competition concludes Sunday with preliminaries in the morning and afternoon and finals in the evening.
