Westfield State too much for PSU Women’s Swimming & Diving

WESTFIELD, Mass. - The Westfield State College swimming and diving team won its fourth straight meet Saturday afternoon, cruising to a 163-121 victory over Plymouth State University. The Owls upped their record to 4-2, while the Panthers complete the semester break at 2-2.

The hosts captured 10 of the 16 events in the meet. Senior Vanessa Morton (Wellfleet, Mass.), junior Katie Piquette (Seekonk, Mass.) and sophomore Renee Kruszyna (Chesire, Mass.) were double winners for Westfield. Morton won the 200-yard freestyle (2:06.77) and the 50-yard freestyle (26.49) and also anchored the winning 200-yard free relay team. Kruszyna hit the wall first in the 100-yard butterfly (1:04.95) and the 50-yard butterfly (29.49), while Piquette placed first in the 50-yard breaststroke (36.49) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:18.61).

The Owls had three other swimmers who also earned a first-place finish. Freshman Kelly Johnson (Westford, Mass.) won the 50-yard backstroke (31.64), sophomore Melissa Blain (Somers, Conn.) took the 100-yard freestyle (1:00.57), and freshman Cairsten Beanland (Westford, Mass.) won the 500-yard freestyle (5:46.11).

Junior Cait Anton (Woolwich, Maine) was a triple winner for the Panthers. She placed first in the 1000-yard freestyle (11:42.42), 100-yard backstroke (1:07.06), and the 200-yard individual medley (2:27.93). Junior Danielle DeStefano (Centerville, Mass.) won both the one-meter voluntary (160.30 and optional (162.15) diving events.

PSU's other victory came in the final race, the 400-yard free relay.

After taking a break for final exams and the holidays, PSU returns to competition with three straight home dual meets in January, beginning on Saturday the 7th against Bentley (1:00 p.m.)
