PSU in 14th place at New England Women’s Swimming & Diving meet

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Sophomore Lindsay Osborne (Oak Ridge, N.C.) posted the top two individual finishes for Plymouth State University Friday on Day One of the New England Women's Swimming and Diving Championships, hosted by Western New England College, helping the Panthers to 14th place among the 22 competing schools.

The Panthers as a team have scored 88 points in the three-day event.  Bentley leads the standings (with 391.5 points), with UMass Dartmouth second (192) and Bridgewater State third (163).

Osborne placed 10th in the 100-yard butterfly (in a time of one minute, 5.96 seconds), and captured 11th in the 50-yard freestyle (26.82 seconds).  She set personal best times in both events in the preliminaries (1:05.07 and 26.45, respectively).

PSU's other top individual finishes came from freshman Amanda Branch (Grey, Maine), who placed 13th in the 100-yard butterfly (1:08.06), and sophomore Christina DiGiacomo (Meriden, Conn.), who was 14th in the 500-yard freestyle (5:37.15).  DiGiacomo dropped over eight seconds off her best time, finishing less than a half-second off the PSU school record of 5:36.66.

Osborne also swam on both Panther relay teams on Friday.  She led off the 11th-place 200-yard free relay team (1:50.34) and was followed by freshmen Ayla VanClief (Saco, Maine) and Trista Garrity (Saco, Maine) and senior Kristen Mulcahey (Pawtucket, R.I.)  Osborne swam the butterfly leg on PSU's 13th-place 400-yard medley relay team (4:28.10) that also included juniors Cait Anton (Woolwich, Maine) and Katie Bouffard (Essex Jct., Vt.) and DiGiacomo.

The competition continues both Saturday and Sunday, with preliminaries in the afternoon and finals in the evening. PSU finished 11th out of 22 teams last year.
