PSU Womens Swimmers finish in 15th place at New England Championships
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Plymouth State University ended up in 15th place out of 22 schools Sunday night after the final day of competition at the New England Intercollegiate Division II-III Women's Swimming and Diving Championships, hosted by Western New England College. The Panthers finished with 225 points in the three-day event. Bentley won the team title with 995 points, with UMass Dartmouth second (575) and Bridgewater State third (473). PSU was just behind 14th-place Eastern Connecticut (243.5) and well ahead of 16th-place Western New England (118).
Sophomore Christina DiGiacomo (Meriden, Conn.)
(left) turned in the top Panther performance of the
three-day meet on Sunday, earning All-New England honors with a
sixth-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle. She finished the
preliminaries in a personal-best time of 58.63 seconds to narrowly
qualify for the finals, and went 58.25 in the finals to finish
sixth. DiGiacomo also placed 13th in the 200 free and 14th in the
Junior Cait Anton (Woolwich, Maine) brought home 15th place in the 50-yard backstroke Sunday night with a time of 31.37 seconds. She had also placed 10th in the 100 back. Freshman Trista Garrity (Saco, Maine) recorded her top individual finish Sunday in the 100 free with a 17th place (1:00.19).
PSU also placed 12th in the meet's final event, the 400-yard free relay. The team of Garrity, DiGiacomo, Anton and sophomore Lindsay Osborne (Oak Ridge, N.C.) finished 12th in a time of 4:00.32.
Plymouth State completed the dual meet season with a 4-6 record under 15th-year head coach Al Switzer and 16th-year assistant Deb Link.
