Wellesley sinks PSU Women’s Swimming & Diving

WELLESLEY, Mass. - Wellesley College captured 14 of the 16 events Saturday afternoon and defeated Plymouth State University, 228-69, at Chandler Pool in the first women's swimming and diving dual meet of the season for both teams.

Wellesley swept all 14 swimming events to cruise home with the victory. PSU senior Danielle DeStefano (Centerville, Mass.) captured the other two events, taking the one-meter diving with 206.20 points, 0.25 ahead of the second place diver, and winning the three-meter diving with 211.95 points, more than 20 points ahead of the runner-up.

The Blue were led by sophomore Jenny Wu (Livingston, N.J.), who won three individual events - the 200-yard freestyle, 200-yard breaststroke and 200-yard individual medley. Sophomore Carolyn O'Hara (Bedford, N.H./West) and senior Nina Johnson (Birmingham, Ala.) were double winners, O'Hara taking the 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard butterfly and Johnson touching first in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle.

PSU's top swimming performances came from sophomore Christina Labriola (Westerly, R.I.), who placed second in the 100-yard backstroke, and freshman Caitlin Little (Scituate, Mass.), who finished second in the 50-yard free. Third-place finishes were turned in by freshman Tracey Posnick (Sharon, Mass.) in the 1000-yard free, senior Katie Bouffard (Essex Jct., Vt.) in the 100-yard breaststroke, sophomore Amanda Branch (Gray, Maine) in the 200-yard fly, senior Cait Anton (Woolwich, Maine) in the 200-yard back, and junior Christina DiGiacomo (Meriden, Conn.) in the 500-yard free.

"We had some nice swims and some good times," said PSU head coach Al Switzer. "The ladies did a nice job; I'm pleased with our performance. Wellesley is very strong, and they've gotten even stronger in recent years."

PSU, 0-1, returns to Plymouth for the home opener next Saturday at the PSU Natatorium against Regis College (1:00 p.m.)
