Little and DeStefano lead PSU Women’s Swimming/Diving past UMD

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Freshman Caitlin Little (Scituate, Mass.) and senior Danielle DeStefano (Centerville, Mass.) won two events apiece Saturday afternoon as Plymouth State University defeated the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 151-132, in a women's swimming and diving meet at the PSU Natatorium.

The Panthers captured nine of the 16 events in the meet and defeated the Corsairs for the first time since Dec. 6, 1997. UMD had defeated PSU in dual meets the past six seasons. Plymouth State improves to 3-5 in dual meets this winter, while UMD falls to 1-7.

Little won the two sprint freestyle events with season-best times, taking the 50-yard free in 26.11 seconds and the 100 free in 57.26 seconds. DeStefano remained unbeaten on the diving board in dual meets this season, winning the one-meter event with a season-high 234.95 points and the three-meter with a score of 214.60.

PSU had four other individual winners -- freshman Tracey Posnick (Sharon, Mass.) in the 1,000 free (11:49.99); freshman Chaz Sweeney (Methuen, Mass.) and sophomore Christina Labriola (Westerly, R.I.) in the 50 and 100 backstroke (31.61 and 1:07.81, respectively); and senior Cait Anton (Woolwich, Maine) in the 200 individual medley (2:28.48).

Junior Renee Kruszyna (Cheshire, Mass.) and freshman Kathleen Foley (Haverhill, Mass.) collected two wins apiece for the Corsairs. Kruszyna took the 200 free (2:09.50) and 500 free (5:43.12) and Foley touched first in the 50 and 100 breaststroke (35.65 and 1:15.94, respectively). UMD also swept the butterfly races, with senior Meaghan Coache (New Bedford, Mass.) winning the 50 (27.89) and junior Katelyn Chase (Acushnet, Mass.) taking the 100 (1:07.44).

The Corsairs won the 400 medley relay to open the meet, while PSU finished off the competition with a win in the 400 free relay.

PSU wraps up the regular season next Saturday (Feb. 3) with a dual meet at Simmons College (1:00 p.m.) UMD competes in a dual meet next Saturday at Colby-Sawyer (1:00 p.m.)
