Wellesley too strong for PSU Women’s Swimming/Diving

            PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Sophomore Hilary Gram (Hopkinton, Mass.) and junior Kate Sorenson (Bolton, Mass./Hollis-Brookline) won two events apiece Saturday afternoon to lead Wellesley College to a 177-111 victory over Plymouth State University in the first women's swimming and diving dual meet of the season at the PSU Natatorium.

            Wellesley captured 13 of the 16 events overall, and set four pool records in the process.  Gram won two swimming events, taking the 200-yard individual medley (2:25.22) and the 200-yard butterfly (2:20.04), and Sorenson placed first in both diving events, scoring 235.15 points on the one-meter board and a pool-record 249.35 points on the three-meter board.

            The three Blue swimmers who set pool records en route to first place finishes were freshman Alex Simas (Bellevue, Wash.) in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:01.44), junior Carolyn O'Hara (Bedford, N.H./West) in the 200-yard backstroke (2:19.71) and junior Jenny Wu (Livingston, N.J.) in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:31.28).

            The other Wellesley individual winners in the meet were junior Stepheny Xiang (Wellesley, Mass.) in the 200-yard freestyle (2:10.28), junior Elise Spedden (Clarskville, Md.) in the 100-yard backstroke (1:06.92), freshman Mary Shepro (Wayne, Ill.) in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:16.18), and freshman Dana Dutton (Anacortes, Wash.) in the 50-yard freestyle (26.11).

            PSU had two exciting swimming victories, sophomore Caitlin Little (Scituate, Mass.) winning the 100-yard freestyle (59.39) and sophomore Tracey Posnick (Sharon, Mass.) the 500-yard freestyle (5:56.53).

            The teams split the two relay races, Wellesley taking the 200-yard medley relay and PSU winning the 400-yard free relay.

            PSU, 0-1, is back in action next Saturday at Regis College (1:00 p.m.)  Wellesley returns to the pool Wednesday at MIT (7:00 p.m.)
