PSU Womens Swimming & Diving edges UMass Dartmouth
NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. - Plymouth State University and the University of Massachusetts split the 16 events in Saturday's women's swimming and diving meet, but the Panthers pulled out a 144-136 win with more depth and a victory in the final race of the meet.
PSU won both relays races, with the team of sophomore Chaz Sweeney (Methuen, Mass.), junior Kaitlyn Milligan (Forestdale, Mass./Sandwich), sophomore Caitlin Little (Scituate, Mass.) and senior Christina DiGiacomo (Meriden, Conn.) taking first in the 200 medley relay to open the meet, and the combination of DiGiacomo, Little, Milligan and junior Lindsay Osborne (Cedar Falls, Iowa) clinching the team victory by winning the 400-yard freestyle relay to conclude the meet.
Little and Sweeney were two of the five Panthers who won individual events. Little touched first in the fastest event, the 50-yard freestyle (26.75 seconds) and sophomore Tracey Posnick (Sharon, Mass.) won the longest race, the 1000-yard freestyle (12:09.49). Sweeney and junior Christina Labriola (Westerly, R.I.) finished 1-2 in the two backstroke events, Sweeney finishing first and Labriola second in the 50 yard back (31.22) and Labriola posting a season-best 2:27.44 to come in first ahead of runner-up Sweeney in the 200-yard back. Senior Kate Marrie (Swampscott, Mass.) took first place in the two diving events, scoring 154.80 on one-meter and 157.00 on the three-meter board.
UMass Dartmouth had strong performances from seniors Renee Kruszyna (Cheshire, Mass.) and Katelyn Chase (Westport, Mass.) and sophomore Kathleen Foley (Haverhill, Mass.). Kruszyna and Foley were triple winners, Kruszyna capturing the 100-yard free, 200 free and 50 butterfly and Foley the 50 and 200 breaststroke as well as the 200 individual medley. Chase took two grueling events, the 200 butterfly and 500 freestyle.
PSU, 3-5, returns home for the final dual meet of the season next Saturday, Feb. 3, against Simmons College (1:00 p.m.) UMD, 3-8, hosts Colby-Sawyer in its dual meet final next Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
