NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. - Plymouth State University is in 13th place out of 22 schools after the first day of the New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association's Women's Division II-III Championships, hosted by the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.
The Panthers scored 65 points on Friday, the first day of the three-day meet, with nine events completed. Bryant University leads the pack with 302 points, Keene State College is second with 297, and Bentley College is third with 285.
Three PSU swimmers scored points with strong performances in individual events. Sophomore Caitlin Little (Scituate, Mass.) had the best finish for the Panthers, tying for eighth place in the 50-yard freestyle with a season-best time of 26.47 seconds. Junior Kaitlyn Milligan (Forestdale, Mass./Sandwich) took an 11th place in the 50-yard breaststroke with a time of 35.24 seconds, and classmate Amanda Branch (Gray, Maine/Bonny Eagle) finished 16th in the 100-yard butterfly, touching the wall in 1:06.99 (she swam a season-best 1:06.51 in the preliminaries).
Plymouth State finished in the middle of the pack in the two relay races on the evening. The team of Milligan, Little, sophomore Chaz Sweeney (Methuen, Mass.) and freshman Lindsay Graham (Framingham, Mass.) placed 10th in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:49.42, and the group of Sweeney, Graham, Branch and senior Christina DiGiacomo (Meriden, Conn./Platt) ended up 12th in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 4:34.82.
The competition continues Saturday and Sunday at UMD, with preliminaries in the afternoon and finals in the evening.
