PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Westfield State College won 10 of the 16 events Saturday afternoon and defeated Plymouth State University, 160-135, at the PSU Natatorium in the final swimming and diving meet of the semester for both schools.
Senior Aimee Raposo (North Dartmouth, Mass.) and freshman Kimi Schmidt (Longmeadow, Mass.) each won two events for the Owls, who complete the first semester with a 4-2 record in dual meets. Freshman Nicole Brodeur (Claremont, N.H./Vermont Academy) was the standout of the meet for Plymouth State, winning three individual events and swimming a leg on PSU's winning 200-yard medley relay as the Panthers conclude the semester with a 1-2 dual meet record.
Raposo won the 50-yard breaststroke in 34.95 seconds and took the 100-yard breast in one minute, 15.05 seconds. Schmidt captured both diving events, scoring 220.35 points on the one-meter board and 222.40 on the three-meter.
Five other Owls finished first in individual events. Senior Cairsten Beanland (Westford, Mass.) won the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:40.68); junior Lindsay Malboeuf (Westford, Mass.) took the 50-yard backstroke (30.37 seconds); sophomore Tiffany Moreno (Middlebury, Conn.) touched first in the 50-yard free (27.52 seconds); senior Kelly Johnson (Westford, Mass.) was first in the 100-yard back (1:06.24); and freshman Kate Werner (Lowell, Mass.) was the winner of the 500-yard free (5:41.89).
Brodeur won the 200-yard free in 2:05.56, the 100-yard free in 58.09 seconds, and the 50-yard fly in 29.21 seconds. She also swam the butterfly leg on the winning 200-medley relay, joining junior Chaz Sweeney (Methuen, Mass.), freshman Brittany Bradley (Scarborough, Maine) and senior Kaitlyn Milligan (Forestdale, Mass.)
Also winning individual events for PSU were senior Amanda Branch (Gray, Maine) in the 100-yard butterfly (1:07.24) and junior Tracey Posnick (Sharon, Mass.) in the 200-yard individual medley (2:28.83).
PSU opens the second semester of competition on Sunday, Jan. 4, with a dual meet at Bentley College (1:00 p.m.) Westfield's first meet on the semester is Saturday, Jan. 24, at home against Bridgewater State (1:00 p.m.)
