WESTON, Mass. -- The Plymouth State University women's swimming and diving team finished in fourth place out of six schools Saturday afternoon at the Regis College Invitational.
The Panthers finished with 521 points in the meet. Mount Holyoke College won the meet with 737 points, exactly 100 points ahead of runner-up University of New England (637). Simmons College placed third with 584, followed by PSU, Husson University (351) and Regis (202).
Four Plymouth State swimmers finished in the top three in individual events, led by senior Chaz Sweeney (Methuen, Mass.), who captured first place in the 50-yard backstroke (31.45 seconds). Freshman Jennifer Samaro (Salem, N.H.) had top-five finishes in three events, placing second in the 200-yard individual medley (2:27.41), fourth in the 100 I.M. (1:09.50) and fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:18.04).
Sophomore Nicole Brodeur (Claremont, N.H./Vermont Academy) also turned in some strong swims for PSU with three third-place finishes. She was third in the 500-yard freestyle (5:47.88), the 100-yard butterfly (1:06.55) and the 200-yard freestyle (2:10.87).
Other top swimming performances for the Panthers included sophomore Brittanie Bradley (Scarborough, Maine) with a third-place in the 50-yard breaststroke (35.56) and a sixth place in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:18.11); sophomore Lara Gruner (Center Barnstead, N.H.) with a fourth place in the 500 free (5:55.78) and a sixth place in the 200 free (2:10.87); senior Caitlin Little (Scituate, Mass.) with a fifth place in the 50 fly (30.25) and a sixth in the 50 free (27.00); and junior Lindsay Graham (Framingham, Mass.) with a fifth place in the 200 I.M. (2:33.32).
PSU's lone entry in the diving events, sophomore Nora Regan (West Hartford, Conn.), took fourth place in both the one-meter voluntary (129.75) and optional (174.10).
The Panthers, 0-1 in dual meets, return to Plymouth to host the first home meet of the season on Sunday, Nov. 22, against Colby-Sawyer College (1:00 p.m. at the PSU Natatorium).
