PSU Women’s Swimming/Diving opens at UMD
Panthers post top swim in season debut
NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The Plymouth State University women's swimming and diving team opened the season Saturday competing at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Invitational, where no team scores were kept.
The meet serves as an early-season competition where teams can compete for times and not places. Six teams were on hand -- PSU, host UMD, Eastern Connecticut State University, Bridgewater State University, Westfield State University, and Rhode Island College – with between 20 and 30 entries in most events.
The Panthers were led by senior Nicole Brodeur, who placed in the top seven in four individual events. She took second place in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:07.30; fourth in the 50 fly in 29.85 seconds; fifth in the 200 free (2:11.71); and seventh in the 100 free (1:00.87).
Sophomore Delia Foley posted some strong swims with a third place in the 500-yard freestyle (5:49.21) and seventh place in the 200 free (2:12.21). Senior Lara Gruner was solid in the distance freestyle, placing fifth in the grueling 1,650 (20:53.89) and seventh in the 500 (6:03.54).
Junior Amy Mulhern turned in a pair of fifth places in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:18.79) and 200-yard individual medley (2:31.48). Senior captain Brittany Shortell was sixth in the 1,650 (21:06.02); senior Brittney Gondek was ninth in the 100 back (1:10.22); and senior Brittanie Bradley placed eighth in the 50 breaststroke (31.52) and ninth in the 100 breast (1:19.49).
PSU was represented in diving by freshman Kristen Windish, who placed fourth on the one-meter board.
The Panthers will be back in the pool next Saturday with a tri-meet at Colby-Sawyer College with Elms College.
