Panthers down Bridgewater St. and Rhode Island Coll.
BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Plymouth State University captured nine of the 16 events Sunday afternoon and earned victories over Bridgewater State University (64-60) and Rhode Island College (91-28) in a double-dual women's swimming and diving meet at BSU.
The Panthers recorded their first two wins of the season to improve their dual meet record to 2-5, while BSU is now 4-7 and RIC's first-year program is 0-2.
Senior Nicole Brodeur and junior Amy Mulhern paced the Panthers with a pair of individual swimming victories, while sophomore Shannon Rogers claimed both diving events. Brodeur finished first in the two butterfly events, winning the 100-yard race in 1:05.95 and the 200 in a season-best 2:30.27; Mulhern touched the wall first in the two backstroke events, taking the 100 back in 1:07.70 and the 200 back in a season-best 2:25.77; and Rogers was uncontested in earning first place in the one-meter and three-meter diving, with a score of 171.70 on the low board and a career-high 163.80 on the high board.
Senior Brittanie Bradley was PSU's top entry in the breaststroke events, winning the 200-yard race in 2:51.91 and placing second in the 100 breast in 1:20.06.
PSU was well-represented in the freestyle events by sophomore Delia Foley and senior Lara Gruner. Foley captured first place in the 200-yard free in 2:11.70 and placed second in the 500 free in 6:01.66, while Gruner finished runner-up in three freestyle races – the 50 (28.39 seconds), 100 (1:01.93) and 1,000 (12:17.23).
Plymouth State returns home to host Western Connecticut State University on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at the PSU Natatorium.
