Panther seniors lead the way on final day
WHITE RIVER JCT., Vt. – The Plymouth State University women's swimming and diving team finished in 15th place among 22 teams at the New England Division II/III Intercollegiate Championships that finished up Sunday night at the Upper Valley Aquatic Center.
The Panthers scored 237.5 points in the 25 events of the three-day meet; finishing 75 points behind 14th-place Bridgewater State University and 63.5 points ahead of 16th-place Saint Joseph's College (Maine). Bentley University captured the championship with 1552.5 points, with Keene State College second with 1358 and Assumption College third with 1061.5.
The final day marked some outstanding performances by the Panther seniors, who completed their careers in fine fashion. Leading the way was Nicole Brodeur, who capped an outstanding career by qualifying for the finals in an individual event for the 12th time. She finished 13th among the 45 entries in the preliminaries of the 100-yard freestyle with a season-best time of 56.43 seconds, and came back strong in the 'B' finals with a 55.96 to place 12th.
Seniors Lara Gruner and Brittney Gondek were also point-scorers for PSU. Gruner placed 16th in the grueling 1,650-yard freestyle in a season-best 19 minutes, 47.30 seconds, and Gondek finished 23rd in the 100-yard individual medley in a season-fastest time of 1:07.40.
The final event was the 400-yard free relay, and PSU's contingent of Gruner, junior Amy Mulhern, Brodeur and Gondek, finished 14th in 3:52.46.
