Panthers open season in non-scoring meet at UMD
NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The Plymouth State University women's swimming and diving team opened the 2012-13 season Saturday with some solid times at the Louise Goodrum Invitational hosted by the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.
The meet, formerly the UMass Dartmouth Invitational, is a non-scoring event that allows numerous student-athletes to compete in a different setting. It is named in memory of the late UMass Dartmouth Associate Director of Athletics who passed away last year.
Senior Jennifer Samaro (Salem, N.H./Central Catholic) and junior Delia Foley (Londonderry, N.H.) posted the top finishes for PSU, each placing second in an event. Samaro finished in the top seven in three different individual events, placing second in the 100-yard breaststroke (with a time of 1:09.77), fifth in the 100-yard butterfly (1:10.13) and seventh in the 200-yard individual medley. Foley took second place in the 1,650-yard freestyle (20:36.54) and ninth in the 500-yard free (5:53.81).
Senior Amy Mulhern (Taunton, Mass.) and freshman Shannon Murtha (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) also turned in strong times in backstroke events for PSU. Mulhern placed seventh in the 100-yard back (1:08.99) after finishing ninth in the 50-yard race (32.16 seconds), while Murtha was eighth in the 50 (32.05) and ninth in the 100 (1:09.88). Mulhern was also right behind Samaro in ninth place in the 200 IM (2:33.49).
The Panthers will make their dual meet season debut on Sunday, Nov. 18, with a home meet against Colby-Sawyer College (1:00 p.m.)
