Foley wins two freestyle events for Panthers
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Colby-Sawyer College captured 13 of the 16 events Sunday afternoon, defeating Plymouth State University, 133.5 to 99.5, in women's intercollegiate swimming and diving action at the PSU Natatorium.
Sophomore Krystyna Estrada (Lebanon, N.H.) led the way for the Chargers, winning three individual events and swimming the anchor leg on the winning 200-yard medley relay team. Estrada took first in the three sprint freestyle events, winning the 50-yard race in 25.92 seconds, the 100 in 58.27 seconds and the 200 in 2:04.07.
Junior Erin Dunican (Bennington, Vt.) and freshman Emma Nagle (Hanover, Mass.) were also double winners for the visitors, while also swimming on the winning medley relay team. Dunican was the fastest in the 50-yard breaststroke with a time of 34.71 seconds and the 100 breast in 1:15.44, while Nagle touched the wall first in the 50-yard butterfly (29.35) and the 100 fly (1:05.41). The Chargers also swept the backstroke events, with freshman Elaine Miller (Windham, Maine) winning the 50 in 31.40 seconds and classmate Hannah Willcutt (Tilton, N.H./Winninsquam) taking the 100 in 1:09.70.
Freshman Samantha Dalphond (Chelmsford, Mass.) was the top scorer in both diving events for Colby-Sawyer, accumulating 132.75 to win the one-meter voluntary and 188.85 to clinch the one-meter optional.
The host Panthers got a pair of victories from junior Delia Foley (Londonderry, N.H.), as she took the two distance freestyle events. She finished the 1,000-yard free in a winning time of 11 minutes, 59.01 seconds, and she was the fastest in the 500 free in five minutes, 44.05 seconds. Senior Jennifer Samaro (Salem, N.H./Central Catholic) also captured a victory for PSU, winning the 200-yard individual medley in 2:28.36.
PSU (0-1) had a number of runner-up finishes, including sophomore Nora Doherty (Dorchester, Mass.) in the 50 back (33.12 seconds), senior Amy Mulhern (Taunton, Mass.) in the 50 breast (36.79), freshman Shannon Murtha (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) in the 100 back (1:10.77), and Samaro in the 100 fly (1:09.91) and 100 breast (1:16.23).
Plymouth State's next competition is the Little East Conference Championship meet on Saturday, Dec. 1, at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. Colby-Sawyer (4-1) will compete at the Roger Williams University Invitational on Nov. 30-Dec. 1, in Bristol, R.I.
