Mulhern leads PSU Women’s Swimming/Diving past WCSU

Panthers post third straight victory; Senior Day Saturday

            DANBURY, Conn. – Senior Amy Mulhern (Taunton, Mass.) captured three individual events and swam on a winning relay team Monday afternoon as the Plymouth State University women's swimming and diving team defeated Western Connecticut State University, 111-89, in a dual meet at the O'Neill Center pool.

            Plymouth State won 12 of 16 events to post the victory, improving to 3-5 overall, while Western Conn. drops to 1-5.

            Mulhern led PSU with victories in the 50-yard backstroke (33.46 seconds), the 100-yard back (1:10.71), and the 50-yard butterfly (:32.07).  Juniors Delia Foley (Londonderry, N.H.) and Shannon Rogers (Beverly, Mass.) were also double-winners for PSU, Foley taking the 1,650-yard free (20:36.88) and the 500-yard free (6:02.85) while Rogers captured both the one-meter and three-meter diving events with scores of 169.65 and 164.30 respectively.

            Other Panther winners included junior Jackie Viotto (Morristown, N.J.) in the 50-yard breaststroke (39.95); senior Jennifer Samaro (Salem, N.H.) in the 100 fly (1:12.67); and freshman Kelly Merkle (Salem, N.H.) in the 100 free (1:03.20).

            The Plymouth State 200 medley relay team of Doherty, Samaro, Mulhern, and Merkle touched first with a time of 2:10.06, while the 200 free relay team of Merkle, Foley, and sophomores Lauren D'Iorio (Kennebunk, Maine) and Jessica Bierschied (Portsmouth, N.H.) closed out the meet in first place with a time of 1:57.54.

            For Western, senior Danielle Leprine (New Fairfield, Conn.) was a triple winner, capturing first place in the 50 yard freestyle (28.00), 100 breaststroke (1:16.76), and the 200 IM (2:27.94).  Western's other first-place finisher was freshman Sarah Basile (Plainville, Conn.) in the 200 free (2:20.58).

            The Colonials return to the pool this Saturday when they host Sacred Heart at the O'Neill Center Pool.  PSU returns home to host the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Saturday on Senior Day at the PSU Natatorium.
