PSU Women’s Swimming/Diving splits double-dual at BSU

Panthers fall to Bears but sink Anchorwomen of RIC

            BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Plymouth State University women's swimming and diving team split a double-dual meet Saturday afternoon, defeating the Anchorwomen of Rhode Island College, 34-19, and falling to the host Bears of Bridgewater State University, 24-20.

            The Panthers were led by junior swimmer Sam Carberry (Shrewsbury, Pa.) and senior diver Shannon Rogers (Beverly, Mass.), who were both double-winners.

            Carberry took first place in the both the 100-yard butterfly (1:06.40) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:07.69) and finished runner-up in the 100-yard individual medley (1:10.32). She also swam the lead-off leg of PSU's winning 200-yard medley relay team (2:08.84). Rogers captured both the one- and three-meter diving with career-best scores in both events; she tallied 192.41 points on the low board and 186.00 points on the high board.

            Carberry was joined by freshmen Meaghan Doherty (Charlestown, Mass.) and Jessie Blake (Portland, Maine) and sophomore Kelly Merkle (Salem, N.H.) on the winning 200-medley relay team. Merkle finished runner-up in two individual events, taking second in the 100-yard free (1:01.96) and the 50-yard butterfly(32.16).

            PSU returns to competition next Saturday with a dual meet at Saint Joseph University in West Hartford, Conn.  (1:00 p.m.)
