PSU Women’s Swimming/Diving defeats Saint Joseph (Conn.)
Carberry, Foley, Rogers pace Panthers to victory
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Seniors Delia Foley (Londonderry, N.H.) and Shannon Rogers (Beverly, Mass.) and junior Sam Carberry (Shrewsbury, Pa.) won two individual events each Saturday as the Plymouth State University women's swimming and diving defeated the University of Saint Joseph, 145-104, at the Bruyette Natatorium. The Panthers recorded their third victory of the season, upping their record to 3-5.
Carberry led the way for the Panthers, taking first place in the 100-yard butterfly (1:07.64) and the 100-yard backstroke (1:06.42).She also finished runner-up in the 200-yard individual medley (2:31.04) and she swam the anchor leg of PSU's winning 200-yard free relay team (1:53.53).
Foley also captured two races and joined Carberry on the winning relay team. Foley won the 500-yard free in six minutes, 4.94 seconds, and took the grueling 1,650 free in 20 minutes, 29.15 seconds. Rogers captured both one-meter diving events, tallying 165.00 points in the voluntary round and 142.70 in the optional.
Other individual winners for PSU included junior Nora Doherty (Dorchester, Mass.) in the 50-yard backstroke (32.66 seconds); freshman Meaghan Doherty (Charlestown, Mass.) in the 50-yard breaststroke (37.82); and sophomore Kelly Merkle (Salem, N.H.) in the 100-yard free (1:00.85). Merkle and freshman Jessie Blake (Portland, Maine) were also on the winning free relay team.
Freshman Liz Cappiello (Hamden, Conn.) won three individual events for the Blue Jays -- the 200-yard freestyle (2:11.44), 100 breaststroke (1:18.68) and 200 IM (2:27.02). Senior Jessica Gale (East Hartford, Conn.) won two events for the Blue Jays, the 50 butterfly in 29.32 as well as the 50 freestyle (28.17).
PSU returns home for its next meet, which is this Monday against Western Connecticut State University at the PSU Natatorium (11:00 a.m.)
