PSU Women’s Swimming/Diving defeats Western Connecticut

Panthers use team effort to post win over Little East foe

            PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Seniors Delia Foley (Londonderry, N.H.) and Shannon Rogers (Beverly, Mass.) won two individual events each Monday afternoon as the Plymouth State University women's swimming and diving team posted a 137-101 victory over Western Connecticut State University in a dual meet at the PSU Natatorium.

            Foley captured a pair of freestyle events, winning the 200-yard race in 2:14.09 and the 500-yard race in 5:58.40.  Rogers went uncontested to win the one-meter and three-meter diving events, scoring 177.61 and 175.35 points, respectively.

            Four other Panthers also captured individual events. Junior Nora Doherty (Dorchester, Mass.) took the 50-yard backstroke in 32.79 seconds; junior Sam Carberry (Shrewsbury, Pa.) won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:32.36; freshman Jessie Blake (Portland, Maine) touched first in the 50 free in 28.66 seconds; and sophomore Kelly Merkle (Salem, N.H.) was the winner of the 100 free in 1:01.34. Blake, Foley, Merkle and Carberry also teamed together to win the final event, the 200 free relay.

            The Colonials were led by a pair of triple winners.  Senior Danielle Laprine (New Fairfield, Conn.) out-swam the field in the 1,000-yard free (11:27.36), the 50 breaststroke (34.45 seconds) and the 100 breaststroke (1:14.38), while classmate Kathie Meerman (Danbury, Conn.) was the winner of the 50 fly (29.00), the 100 fly (1:05.18) and the 100 backstroke (1:05.64).

            Laprine and Meerman were joined by freshman Brienne Saraceno (New Milford, Conn.) and sophomore Sarah Basile (Plainville, Conn.) on the winning 200-yard medley relay team.

            PSU, 4-5, competes again this Saturday, Feb. 25, at a dual meet at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (1:00 p.m.). Western Conn., 3-4, swims again on Saturday, Feb. 1, at Westfield State University.
