PSU Women’s Swimming defeats Western Connecticut

Carberry takes three events for Panthers; Wyman, Farmer with two wins each

            PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Plymouth State University won 11 of the 16 events Monday afternoon, defeating Western Connecticut State University, 148-120, in a women's swimming and diving meet at the PSU Natatorium.

            Senior Sam Carberry (Shrewsbury, Pa.) led PSU with three individual victories and a leg in a winning relay race; she won the 200-yard freestyle (swimming backstroke in the race) in two minutes, 21.55 seconds; the 100-yard backstroke in 1:06.07, and the 50-yard butterfly in 30.84 seconds.

            Sophomore Katia Wyman (Portsmouth, N.H.) and freshman Megan Farmer (Plainville, Conn.) also won two events each for the Panthers. Wyman captured the 1000-yard freestyle in 12:23.34 and the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:20.05, while Farmer finished first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 27.77 seconds and the 100-yard free in 1:01.71.

            Other individual winners for PSU included senior Nora Doherty (Dorchester, Mass.) in the 50-yard backstroke (33.07 seconds) and freshman Addie Schumaker (Haymarket, Va.) in the 200-yard individual medley (2:31.99).

            PSU captured both relay races, with Doherty, Schumaker, Farmer and freshman Julia Donahue (Hampstead, N.H.) teaming up to win the 200-yard medley relay (2:08.13) and Donahue, Carberry, freshman Erin Percy (Barrington, N.H.) and Wyman formed the winning 200-yard free relay contingent (2:01.04).

            Juniors Sarah Basile (Plainville, Conn.) and Dana Molloy (Brewster, N.Y.) earned two victories apiece for the visiting Colonials.  Basile was the fastest swimmer in the 50-yard breaststroke in 37.90 seconds as well as the 500-yard freestyle in 6:11.10.  Molloy was the high scorer in both diving events, scoring 156.85 on the one-meter board and 162.35 on the three-meter board.  Freshman Brianna Christiano (Prospect, Conn.) also finished first for the Colonials in the 100-yard butterfly (1:10.55).

            PSU (3-3) returns to action this Saturday, Jan. 24, with the Senior Day meet against the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth at the PSU Natatorium. Western Conn. (1-5) will swim against Rhode Island College next Sunday, Jan. 25, at Bryant University.
