Saunders honored for performance on the track; West excels in the pool
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Five Plymouth State University student-athletes were honored Monday by the Little East Conference (LEC) for their performances in Panther track & field and swimming competition last week.
Freshman Kyle Saunders (Hudson, N.H.) was named LEC Men's Track Rookie of the Week, and freshman Julia West (Wiscasset, Maine) was selected LEC Women's Swimming Rookie of the Week. In addition, PSU's 200-yard medley relay team of West, sophomore Addie Schumaker (Haymarket, Va.), and freshmen Julia Mazza (Belchertown, Mass.) and Deanne DeGrazia (Westport, Mass.) were tabbed as the LEC Women's Swimming Relay Team of the Week.
Saunders won the 500 meter dash last Saturday in a time of one minute, 10.83 seconds, as PSU placed third out of four teams in the Plymouth State Invitational at the new Davis Track. Saunders he was joined by classmate Warren Bartlett (Loudon, N.H.), sophomore Brendan Polichronopoulos (Penacook, N.H.) and freshman Sam Brunnette (Newport, Vt.) for a second-place finish in the 4x800 meter relay.
West captured three first-place finishes last Saturday in a dual meet victory over the University of Saint Joseph (Conn.). She was the first to hit the wall in the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 30.15 seconds, the 50 backstroke in 30.34, and the 50-yard free in 27.28.
The relay contingent of West, Schumaker, Mazza and DeGrazia won the first event of the meet in a time of 2:03.06.
