Switzer named LEC Swim Coach of the Year for the Panthers
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The head coach of Plymouth State University women's swimming and diving team was been recognized by his peers in the Little East Conference (LEC) Thursday for guiding the Panthers to a strong season in 2015-16.
Veteran Panther head coach Al Switzer was voted the 2016 LEC Women's Swimming Coach of the Year. The votes were cast by the LEC's head women's swimming coaches.
Plymouth State finished the dual meet season with a 7-3 record under Switzer, the team's best record since 2009-10. The Panthers posted dual meet wins over conference foes Western Connecticut State University and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, and finished 14th at the New England Intercollegiate Swimming & Diving Association (NEISDA) Championships.
PSU had a strong recruiting class this past season, with a group of five freshmen who were among the top newcomers in New England.
Now in his 25th year at Plymouth State after a Hall of Fame career coaching the men's swim team at the University of Maine, Switzer has previously been recognized. He was named New England Women's Diving Coach of the Year in 2003 and 2004 after coaching three of the top five divers in New England.
A Harvard graduate, Switzer coached for 19 years at the University of Maine at Orono, where he guided the highly successful men's program to two New England Division I titles. He was inducted into the UMaine Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001, and was previously inducted into the Hebron Academy (Maine) Athletic Hall of Fame. He was also inducted into the Maine Swimming Hall of Fame in 2015.
