Turell, Allaire lead Panthers in season debut
DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Sophomore Casey Allaire (Mattapoisett, Mass.) and freshman Cammie Turell (Bowie, Md.) both had solid season debuts as the Plymouth State University women's swimming and diving team opened the 2017-18 season at the Louise Goodrum Invitational hosted by the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.
The meet was non-team scoring. Also competing were Bridgewater State University, Eastern Connecticut State University, Husson University, Rhode Island College, UMass Dartmouth, University of St. Joseph's (Conn.) and Westfield State University.
Allaire posted a pair of first place finishes in the 1-meter dive and 3-meter dive. The defending New England champion in both events posted scores of 225.25 and 214.60, while blowing away the competition. The second place finisher in the 1-meter dive scored 178.75 points, while the runner-up in the 3-meter dive finished nearly 70 points behind.
Turell was the top PSU finisher for each of the four events in which she competed. The rookie placed second in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 26.48, just 0.16 seconds off the lead, and took third in the 100-yard freestyle in 59.63. She added a sixth place result in the 200-yard freestyle and a tenth place finish in the 100-yard backstroke to complete a successful inaugural meet.
PSU also had solid performances from senior Emily Wadlinger (Lebanon, N.H.), who finished third in the 50-yard freestyle, fifth in the 50-yard breaststroke and seventh in the 500-yard freestyle, and sophomore Megan Gresham (Waterbury Center, Vt.), who placed seventh in the 100-yard butterfly and 11th in the 50-yard butterfly.
Junior Julia Mazza (Belchertown, Mass.) took 11th in the 100-yard backstroke, 14th in the 200-yard freestyle and 16th in the 100-yard IM. Senior Addie Schumaker (Haymarket, Va.) was 13th in the 100-yard IM and 15th in the 200-yard freestyle, and freshman Sylvie Donnell (Warren, N.H.) had an impressive debut with a 16th place finish in the 500-yard freestyle.
Sophomore Frances Grieco (Brookfield, Conn.) also competed for the Panthers.
The Panthers compete in their first dual meet at Colby-Sawyer College on Friday (Nov. 10), starting at 4:00 p.m., before opening the home schedule with a tri-meet against Eastern Connecticut and Western New England University on Saturday, Nov. 18.
