PSU Women’s Swimming & Diving finishes fifth at LEC Championships

Allaire wins 3-meter dive; Turell posts two top-five finishes

            DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Sophomore Casey Allaire (Mattapoisett, Mass.) won the 3-meter dive and freshman Cammie Turell (Bowie, Md.) earned a pair of top-five finishes as the Plymouth State University women's swimming and diving team finished fifth among seven teams at the Little East Conference Championships at the Tripp Athletic Center Pool on the campus of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on Saturday.

            Keene State won its 12th straight LEC crown in deciding fashion, posting 534.5 points. Westfield State took second (270) with host UMass Dartmouth (229.5) finishing in third. Eastern Connecticut State (214), Plymouth State (134), Western Connecticut State (100) and Rhode Island College (48) rounded out the competition.

            For the first time this season Allaire didn't sweep the diving events as she finished second in 1-meter diving with 217.75 points, trailing just Monique Groux of Westfield State (227.40). Allaire got her revenge on the 3-meter board, narrowly earning the title over Groux by a 219.60 to 218.70 margin.

            Turell earned top-five finishes in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly and took sixth in the 100-yard freestyle. The rookie cruised to a third place finish in the 50-yard freestyle with a personal best time of 25.90, more than a half second better than her previous mark. Turell touched the wall just ahead of senior teammate Emily Wadlinger (Lebanon, N.H.), who took fourth in a season-best time of 25.98.

            Turell finished fifth in the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 1:07.22, and also posted a personal record 57.70 to take sixth in the 100-yard freestyle.

            Wadlinger also had a good day for the Panthers. She took sixth in the 200-yard backstroke touching the wall in 2:22.85, the fastest time for her this season. She added a seventh place finish in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:06.30, just 0.01 seconds shy of her top time.

            Sophomore Megan Gresham (Waterbury Center, Vt.) earned PSU's other top-five finish with a season-best time of 2:37.41 in the 200-yard butterfly.

            Senior Addie Schumaker (Haymarket, Va.), junior Stephanie LaBeck (Oakville, Conn.) and freshman Sylvie Donnell (Warren, N.H.) also posted season-best times during the meet. Schumaker swam the 100-yard backstroke in 1:12.51 to finish 14th, while LaBeck posted a 2:31.54 in the 200-yard freestyle to earn 14th place. Donnell was just behind her with a 2:32.24 and also swam the 50-yard freestyle in a personal record time of 31.05.

            The Panthers wrap up the season at the New England Intercollegiate Swimming & Diving Association (NEISDA) Championships at the University of Rhode Island from Feb. 16-18.
