PSC Finishes Fourth at LEC Women's Tennis Championships

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. - Plymouth State College's young women's tennis team brought home fourth place Sunday from the Little East Conference Championships at UMass Dartmouth.

The Panthers finished with 6.5 points in the team scoring for first-year head coach Judy Switzer. The host Corsairs scored 23 points and captured their third straight LEC title, while Rhode Island College, which finished sixth last year, was runner-up with 20 points. The University of Southern Maine was just ahead of PSC with nine points, and Western Connecticut and UMass Boston rounded out the scoring with four and two points, respectively.

Plymouth State had three singles players and one double tandem advance to the semi-finals in their respective brackets, but none could get past the tough players from UMD and RIC. Sophomore Rachel Lorenz (Moultonboro, NH) won her first match at No. 1 singles but was derailed by three-time LEC champion Kelly Berger of UMD. Sophomore Liza Tallarita (Warwick, RI) was a semi-finalist in the No. 3 bracket but lost to RIC's Joy Fox, a two-time LEC champion. Junior Jen Letter (Nashua, NH) won her first round match at No. 5 but lost to UMD's Christina Bendzewicz.

"I was very happy with the way we played," said Switzer. "I thought we showed definite improvement over the course of the season. We've been playing a lot better lately, and we really played well in the tournament."

PSC's other three singles entries were all knocked off in the first round and finished fifth in their flights - senior Sarah Schutzendorf (Fayetteville, NY) at No. 2, sophomore Jamie Hupper (Merrimack, NH) at No. 4, and sophomore Becky Wark (Westbrook, ME) at No. 6.

In the doubles competition, which was played Saturday, Lorenz and Schutzendorf won their opening match at No. 1, and gave UMD's veteran duo of Kelly Berger and Mary Bourque a tough match in the semi-finals before falling, 6-4, 6-4.

PSC's combo of Tallarita and Letter was defeated twice at No. 2 doubles, and Hupper and freshman Amy Fritz (Liverpool, NY) lost their only match at No. 3.
