PSU Womens Tennis defeated by Colby-Sawyer
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Colby-Sawyer College captured four of the six singles matches and two of the three doubles encounters Thursday afternoon, registering a 6-3 victory over Plymouth State University in a Granite State women's tennis match at the P.E. Center Courts.
The Chargers took a 2-1 lead after doubles play, sparked by the come-from-behind triumph at No. 1 doubles by senior Kate Rocheford (Worcester, Mass.) and freshman Alex Hardenbrook (Kennebunk, Maine). The Colby-Sawyer duo overcame a 7-0 deficit to win the pro-set affair, 9-7, over PSU sophomores Whitney O'Leary (Sagamore Beach, Mass.) and Jessie Leone (Cataumet, Mass.).
The teams split the other doubles matches, with PSU senior Katie Olsen (Reading, Mass.) and sophomore Megan Sowers (Londonderry, N.H.) winning 8-0 at No. 2, and CSC freshmen Paige Pulley (Bethesda, Md.) and Jocelyn Poplack (Houston, Tex.) 8-3 winners at No. 3.
Colby-Sawyer sealed the victory with four singles wins - Hardenbrook at No. 1, Rocheford at No. 2, Poplack at No. 4, and Pulley at No. 6. PSU's singles wins came from Olsen at No. 3 and sophomore Rachel Xavier (Meredith, N.H.) at No. 5.
The outcome leaves Plymouth State at 0-2 on the season, while the Chargers are off to a 1-0 start to the campaign.
PSU will look for its first win of the season Saturday in a Little East Conference match at Southern Maine (2:00 p.m.). Colby-Sawyer returns home to host Curry next Tuesday in a Commonwealth Coast Conference match (4:00 p.m.).
