PSU Womens Tennis knocks off Salem State
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Plymouth State University's women's tennis team picked up its first victory of the season Tuesday afternoon with a 6-3 triumph over Salem State College at the P.E. Center Courts.
The Panthers won two of the three doubles matches and four of the six singles encounters to pull out the victory. PSU is now 1-3 on the season, while Salem State drops to 1-1.
Sophomores Whitney O'Leary (Sagamore Beach, Mass.) and Rachel Xavier (Meredith, N.H.) led the Panthers with two victories apiece. O'Leary won her match at No. 2 singles after teaming with classmate Jessie Leone (Cataumet, Mass.) for a victory at No. 1 doubles, while Xavier was a winner at No. 5 singles after combining with senior Cally Thorup (Cumberland, Maine) for a victory at No. 3 doubles.
Also picking up wins for PSU were senior Katie Olsen (Reading, Mass.) at No. 3 singles, and sophomore Megan Sowers (Londonderry, N.H.) at No. 6 singles. Salem State's winners were Kie Tanaka at No. 1 singles, Naomi Touii at No. 4 singles, and the tandem of Tanaka and Touii at No. 2 doubles.
PSU is back in action Saturday with a Little East Conference match at Rhode Island College (1:00 p.m.). Salem State plays again Thursday at UMass Dartmouth (3:30 p.m.).
