CASTLETON, Vt. - The Plymouth State University women's tennis team had little trouble against Castleton State College Tuesday, handing the Spartans an 8-1 non-conference defeat.
The Panthers swept the three doubles matches, then took five of the six singles encounters in straight sets to capture the victory. PSU improves to 2-4 on the season, while Castleton State drops to 4-2.
Leading the Panthers was the sophomore tandem of Jessie Leone (Cataumet, Mass.) and Whitney O'Leary (Sagamore Beach, Mass.), who teamed together for an 8-0 win at No. 1 doubles. Leone also registered her first win of the season at No. 1 singles, and O'Leary earned her second victory at No. 2 singles.
Three other Panthers also collected two wins apiece against the Spartans. Senior Katie Olsen (Reading, Mass.) was a winner at No. 3 singles, evening her season record at 3-3. Olsen was joined by sophomore Meg Sowers (Londonderry, N.H.) for a win at No. 2 doubles. Sophomore Rachel Xavier (Meredith, N.H.) and senior Cally Thorup (Cumberland, Maine) were victorious at Nos. 4 and 6 singles, and also paired up to win the match at No. 3 doubles. Xavier leads the team in single wins with a 5-1 record.
The Panthers return home for Saturday's Little East Conference home match against UMass Dartmouth (1:00 p.m.).
