PSU Womens Tennis knocks off UMass Boston
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - The Plymouth State University women's tennis team defeated the University of Massachusetts Boston 5-1 Saturday in a Little East Conference match in the P.E. Center Fieldhouse.
The Panthers improve to 4-5 overall and even their LEC mark at 2-2, while UMB drops to 3-6 overall and 0-3 in the Little East. Plymouth State won three of the four singles matches and both doubles matches to register the team victory.
Sophomore Whitney O'Leary (Sagamore Beach, Mass.) was a double-winner for Plymouth State, winning in straight sets at No. 2 singles and teaming with classmate Jessie Leone (Cataumet, Mass.) for a victory at No. 1 doubles. The Panther tandem is now 4-4 in doubles play this season.
Sophomore Rachel Xavier (Meredith, N.H.) and senior Cally Thorup (Cumberland, Maine) captured an 8-0 decision at No. 2 doubles, improving their mark to 5-1 on the season. Senior Katie Olsen (Reading, Mass.) was a winner at No. 3 singles, improving her record to 6-3, while sophomore Megan Sowers (Londonderry, N.H.) won at No. 4 singles to even her season mark at 4-4.
Sophomore Denise Ridge (Milton, Mass.) earned UMB's only win with a straight set victory at No. 1 singles.
PSU plays its final dual match of the season next Saturday at home against Western Connecticut (11:00 a.m.), while UMB is back in action Thursday at Salem State (3:00 p.m.). PSU will also host the Little East Conference Championships on Friday-Saturday, Oct. 17-18.
